North America Smocking Workshop

Service Description

The aim of this workshop is to give you an understanding of the technique of North America smocking and go home with a completed cushion and samples you can experiment with for hairband, brooches etc. 10-11am: Introduction to smocking - Explain the history and background of the technique - Show samples of different patterns - Demo the basic technique 11am-12.30: Laying out the pattern - Complete 2-3 small samples of different patterns to familiarize yourself with the technique. (the sample pieces will be pre-cut and marked out/gingham) - The group can either vote which design to proceed with or the one they have all been most proficient in will be chosen. 12.30am-1/1.30pm: Lunch break 1.30pm-3.00pm: Making the smocking - Each participant will choose a fabric and mark it up with the pattern. - Smocking will be worked across the fabric piece. 3pm-4/4.30pm: Finish the cushion - Neaten/stuff the smocking and pleat up the edges. - Attach to the back piece (if there is time the participant can insert their own zip or use one of the back pieces with a zip already inserted) All materials and equipment included. Lunch provided.
