STILL LIFE

There's something a bit old and fusty about the still life genre, isn't there? With life drawing, there's a beating heart at the centre of the subject but still life with its apples and oranges, mugs and jugs just feels a bit, well... still.
Except it's really not. It has a rich tradition within art history and all the movers and shakers from bygone years found drawing and painting inanimate objects in some sort of arrangement endlessly fascinating... Cézanne and Picasso to name two.

OUTDOOR SKETCHING

Bring along your sketchbooks, watercolours, inks, pens and pencils and draw and paint in the company of others. Each Friday we'll meet in places around Scarborough and learn to look at things. Buildings, flowers, people. Our goal as artists is to be aware of the world around us more acutely. To pull it apart. To analyse how it hangs together. The rhythm of life. Its shape, colour, texture, tone.

CROCHET

We have a woolly vision we’d like you to help us with.
We need the help of crocheters to be a part of our new forthcoming online shop, dedicated to all things crochet.
We want to make and sell the sorts of practical, affordable clothing people like, such as:
Hats, snoods, scarves, ear warmers, slippers and more besides.
If you attend regular crochet meetings and classes at NYAS, you can create garments using our materials.
You can follow patterns we have available, help us look for new ones or create your own.
If your items are sold, you'll earn commission.
Come along and work with likeminded crocheters, share ideas, experiment and try something new.
Everyone is welcome from beginners to the more advanced.

The tradition of making ‘rag’ or ‘thrift’ rugs became widespread during the Industrial Revolution in the nineteenth century. However by the 1920s the craft was dying out as it was associated with hard times. The necessity for thrift during World War II brought a brief revival and interest in the craft grew again in the 1980s.

BATIK

Batik is an ancient textile technique originating in Indonesia and its use then spread to many other countries, with each putting a different cultural slant on the choice of images and their outcomes. The pattern was traditionally applied onto cloth using molten wax with fine brushes or tools called tjantings, before coloured dyes are applied to the fabric.
